A Study on the Year-end of Macao Quasi-Market Trad

The number of Macau casinos decreased by 10% year-on-year from 243 in 2012 to 220 in 2013, according to data collected from private sources by Carlos Siu Lam, an associate professor at the Macau Polytechnic Institute's Game Education Research Center.

According to public data from the Macau Game Inspection Coordination Bureau (DICJ) during the same period, sales of Macau VIP Baccarat actually increased 13% year-on-year.

There is not necessarily a positive correlation between the number of VIP rooms in the market and the number of VIP tables. Combining casino operators who have set higher monthly junket sales targets to boost VIP returns per table in a market constrained by government table growth restrictions, "super junkets" have emerged that in some cases use larger junket rooms, investment analysts say.

However, Siu's research shows that there is a positive correlation between the number of Macau VIP rooms and macroeconomic conditions in the main supply market for mainland Chinese athletes.

His data, dating back to 2007, indicates that the number of VIP rooms fell from 121 to just 69 between 2008 and 2009, when the impact of the global financial crisis affected China's economy.

"These data are from private sources and getting VIP room numbers is not that easy," Mr. Siu said during a presentation at the 2014 International Game, Leisure and Entertainment Conference at the Macau Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday and Thursday.

According to the public data he collected, the number of game promoters licensed by the game bureau has fluctuated with macro situations. In 2009, the number decreased from 235 in 2008 to 226 and from 288 in the previous year to 235 in 2013.

It said the figures released now include face-to-face interviews with junket operators and government officials as part of Mr Siu's year-long study of the Macau junket business.

Interviews provided insights that could not be grasped by official data, but nevertheless used official numbers as a starting point for questions.
